How often should I have a Dental Checkup?

Q: How often should I have a dental exam and cleaning?

A.This depends up on different situations.

  • Saliva flow ( please read FAQs)
  • Plaque or tartar formation:  Some people build tartar (calculas) very quickly in spite of what they do. These patients will have to have their teeth cleaned 2-4 times per year. Also they have to brush more, floss more, and water pic and rinse more.
  • Oral Hygiene: The better your oral hygiene is, the less frequent your exam visits.
  • Size of fillings:  The larger the fillings the more risk there is of decay. The area of the filling which is most susceptible to decay is where the filling stops and the tooth begins.  Kind of like linoleum or vinyl flooring… the area which will get dirty first is the seam where the two pieces come together.
  • Diet: If you have a diet high in sugar or carbohydrates you will need to be seen more frequently, primarily to check for decay.
  • The number and type of bacteria in your mouth: If you are very susceptible to getting cavities and you are flossing brushing, water piccing, Have a good diet with limits on the amount of sugar and the time it is in your mouth, and are still getting cavities, we should send a specimen of your saliva in to a lab where they can test for the number and types of bacteria that are in your mouth

As a general rule, twice per year is sufficient.

What we check for at each cleaning and check up appointment.

  • Changes in medical history: a new diagnosis
  • New Medications: ( especially those that have oral implication such as dry mouth,  prednisone,  or antibiotics which could cause a fungal overgrowth in your mouth.
  • Examination of the teeth and gums through visual exam and X-rays:  to see about abscesses, bone height around your teeth, oral tumors or cysts, and of course decay.
  • Oral cancer screening:  we check the face, lips, tongue, throat tissues and gums for anything abnormal in viewing or palpation.
  • Periodontal Exam: check for any signs of gum disease.
  • Check for tooth decay
  • Observe if you have any oral evidence of sleep apnea or history of sleep apnea.
  • Observe and ask questions about chronic headache. Please go to the following link for information about headaches or sleep apnea – www.RichmondHeadacheClinic.com
  • Usual cleaning of teeth and gums, removal of plaque and tarter, polishing, which removes stains from teeth.
  • Discuss any concerns you might have about how you feel, and is this related to something we can help you with.
